Question:
How does MS open licensing work?
We are going to switch from an office of WordPerfect users to MS Office. Of course, a copy of MS Office costs 5 - 10 times as much as WordPerfect , and we would like to keep the cost down.
I see that you have a 5-license (only) pack of MS Office 2003 for $3

Solution:

The least expesive way to go will be purchasing 5 indivual copies of the OEM version of Microsoft Office.

A descriptionof what OEM software is, can be found here:

What you were looking at, SKU OFCOL11R,  is the open license version of Office 2003 Standard.  To enter into an open license agreement, you must puchase a minumum of 5 licenses.  That is why the qty field is automatically populated with 5.  Therefore you wound be purchasing 5 licenses at $369 each.  Your total would then be 5 x $369 = $1,845 for 5 licenses.  Then, you would have to purchase a media kit (which is the actual CD with the software on it.)  [Think of the licenses as your license to drive, and the media kit as the car or cars rather, that  you will be driving].  Buying all of this would give you the right to install Office standard 2003 on 5 computers, using that media kit-CD.

If you purchase the OEM versions.  It will be cheaper, however, they will not work if you have a previous version of Office already installed on the computer you are trying to install it on.  OEM versions are meant for use by people who sell computers and need to sell them with software already installed on it, therefore, the hard drives would be new and empty. - no upgrades.  They also don't come with support, you would have to go to the software manufacturer's website for support.  However, they are much cheaper.
