Uninstalling Symantec Antivirus 2002 so I can install my new OEM Version
ID: 4 Category: Software Installation Support Status: Resolved Views: 961

Question:

I got a copy of the latest Norton Antivirus 2005 OEM from you, and I can't install it over the old version, it just gets half way through and fails. Help me.

Solution:

Please refer to www.symantec .com for more info.

Often AV programs go so deep into the OS on install they need special removal tools. This is common to many symantec/Norton Products. Please find the solution below. You can find this page and additional resources at -

How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002

Situation:
You want to know how to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002.

Solution:

Before you begin:

  • This document does not apply to Norton AntiVirus 2003 or Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh. See "To uninstall other versions of NAV" in References for these products.
  • This document does not apply to Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition..
  • Manual uninstallation should be tried only if all other methods fail.

Uninstall NAV by using the Control Panel or from the Program list menu. If you cannot uninstall in the recommended ways, then you can use the Rnav2003.exe removal utility.

To uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Control Panel

  • Windows 95/98/Me/NT
  1. Click Start > Settings >Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab for Windows 95/98/Me/NT.
  4. Click Norton AntiVirus in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/ (Remove in Windows 2000/XP.)
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts, and then click Yes or "Yes to all" as needed.
  • Windows 2000/XP
  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Norton AntiVirus in the list of currently installed programs, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts, and then click Yes or "Yes to all" as needed.

To uninstall Norton AntiVirus from the Program list

  1. Click Start > Programs > Norton AntiVirus, and then click Uninstall Norton AntiVirus.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts, and then click Yes or "Yes to all" as needed.

To uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility

  1. Only use this if you cannot uninstall Norton AntiVirus through Add/Remove Programs. Uninstalling Norton AntiVirus through Windows does a more thorough job of removing the program.
  2. Follow the instructions in How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to download and run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility. The Rnav2003.exe removal utility is attached under step 1 in the "To download and run Rnav2003.exe" section of that document.
  3. Rnav2003.exe cannot remove NAV if it is installed as a part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security. If Norton AntiVirus was installed as part of:
    • Norton SystemWorks: Uninstall Norton SystemWorks first, then run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility.
    • Norton Internet Security: Uninstall Norton Internet Security first, then run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility.

To uninstall Norton AntiVirus manually
If you cannot uninstall Norton AntiVirus using the previous methods, then you must uninstall Norton AntiVirus manually. See "To uninstall Norton AntiVirus manually" in References for the document for your product.
